We all consume food and drinks, but what we actually need are water and nutrients derived from these food and drinks. In fact, there are three things our body need to survive and these are:
OXYGEN – WATER – NUTRIENTS
And a healthy balanced diet provides sufficient amount of water and nutrients needed by our bodies in order to run efficiently and helps to prevent us from ill health and disease. Some nutrients provide energy and others are essential for growth and maintenance of our bodies.
The nutrients we derive from our diet are categorised into macronutrients such as CARBOHYDRATES, PROTEIN & FAT and micronutrients such as VITAMINS & MINERALS. All of these nutrients have certain purposes to help our body to function and stay healthy. However, no single food/drink provides all the nutrients we need and this is why we need a balanced diet with a wide variety of foods/drinks from different food groups (i.e. “The Eatwell Plate”).
A healthy balanced diet means different things to different people:
Although a healthy balanced diet is important for the prevention of ill health and disease, whereas eating less healthy might contribute towards disease, a healthy balanced diet is also important during the management or treatment of ill health/disease after a diagnosis has been made.
And health is more than just the absence of disease; it is a state of physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. Eating well helps us to stay healthy and can improve our mood which in turn can help us to cope with the stress of day-to-day living.
Also, for a good quality of life, it is important to eat foods that we love. A balanced diet can include both, healthy and less healthy foods/drinks in the right proportions – we just need to make sure we consume the less healthy foods/drinks in moderation - the right balance is key!!
A healthy balanced diet that provides all the essential nutrients our body needs, in combination with an active lifestyle, leads to
GOOD HEALTH & WELLBEING !!!
